How to Take Care of Your Fireplace Over the Winter

A fireplace can be the coziest part of your home during the winter months, but it needs proper care to stay safe and efficient. At Total Heating and Cooling, we know how important it is to keep your fireplace in top shape, so we’ve put together three simple steps you can take today to keep it running smoothly all season long.

1. Clear the Chimney

Over time, soot and creosote (a flammable byproduct of burning wood) can build up in your chimney. This can block airflow and even lead to dangerous chimney fires. At Total Heating and Cooling, we recommend scheduling a professional chimney sweep at least once a year to remove any buildup and check for structural issues.

Quick Tip: A clean chimney ensures better airflow, which means more heat and less smoke inside your home.

2. Keep the Firebox Clean

The firebox—the part of your fireplace where the fire burns—can fill with ash and debris. Cleaning it out regularly improves efficiency and reduces wear and tear. After your last fire has completely cooled (wait at least 12 hours), scoop out excess ash with a metal shovel. Leave a thin layer of ash (about an inch) to help insulate future fires and make lighting them easier.

3. Use Seasoned Firewood

Burning the right wood makes a big difference. Always use seasoned (dry) hardwoods like oak or birch for cleaner burns and more heat. Avoid wet or green wood—it creates excessive smoke and contributes to creosote buildup.

Quick Tip: Store firewood off the ground in a covered area with good airflow to keep it dry.
